Exploring Automotive Innovation: SMVITM IEEE Students Gain Hands-On Industry Exposure at United Toyota, Mangaluru

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology & Management (SMVITM), Bantakal, in association with the IEEE Student Section, IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS), and IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS), organized an industrial plant visit to the United Toyota Training Center and Authorized Service Facility, Padil, Mangaluru, on 15 October 2026.

A total of 10 IEEE student members from the 3rd and 5th semesters of Mechanical Engineering participated in the visit, coordinated by Mr. Sudhir and Mr. Nagaraj Kalathoor.

The visit provided students with practical exposure to modern automotive servicing technologies, computerized vehicle diagnostics, hybrid vehicle maintenance, and workshop management practices.

Guided by the Service Manager and technical supervisors, students explored various operational sections, including express maintenance, mechanical repair bays, automated wheel balancing, wheel alignment, and bodywork facilities. They also observed vehicle inspection procedures, computerized service scheduling, and diagnostic techniques used in modern automotive workshops.

A major highlight was the hybrid vehicle service bay, where students learned about high-voltage safety protocols, traction battery isolation procedures, and computerized fault diagnosis using Toyota’s specialized diagnostic systems.

Students also visited the spare parts warehouse, gaining insights into automated inventory management and Kanban-based logistics for efficient service operations.

The industrial visit offered valuable insights into real-world automotive engineering practices, emerging hybrid vehicle technologies, and the technical competencies expected in the automobile industry. The experience strengthened students’ understanding of the practical applications of mechanical and automotive engineering concepts.
